Per new state regulations, mattresses and box springs can no longer be disposed of as trash and instead must be recycled. The City of Salem has contracted with UTEC to provide curbside mattress and box spring recycling. Residents are responsible for $40/unit paid directly to UTEC. If a resident is unable to pay this fee, they can complete a Hardship Waiver and return it to the City of Salem Engineering Department, 2nd floor 98 Washington Street.
If there is inclement weather expected on your curbside pickup date, you must place the mattress in a mattress bag. A mattress bag is also necessary if the unit is contaminated. Mattress bags can be purchased online or at hardware stores. You can also reschedule pickup, or cover the mattress with a tarp.
